Lexercise: ideas for summer therapy

Dear Lexercise Clinician

Lexercise is a great tool for summer language-literacy programs. It can energize your practice and help you reach more children. Here are some ideas especially designed for summer:

1. Work with an LD school in your community
Many private, LD schools that use an Orton-Gillingham based curriculum have summer programs. If you have such a school in your community make an appointment with the head of the summer program and propose a Lexercise option for enrolled children. Quote the school a per-student fee that includes the three-month Lexercise subscription fee plus your professional fee for monitoring Lexercise. Coordinate with the school's summer program staff regarding the appropriate level for each child's initial Lexercise Workout, provide weekly or bi-weekly on-line support and monitoring of the child's use of Lexercise and provide periodic reports for school staff. Not only will this pump up your summer income but it may give you a boost for the fall, as well.

2. Offer a free informational program for struggling readers and their parents. You might do this in conjunction with a local pediatrician, pediatric ophthalmologist, LD school or even your local library. Present a 30 to 60-minute information session for parents, explaining what dyslexia is and how it is evaluated. Then consider inviting parents to sign up their child for a free screening. Use the Lexercise Z-Screener and/or the Test of Word Reading Efficiency (TOWRE) for a quick (5-10 min. per child) screening protocol. Offer a 7-day free trial of Lexercise to each child following a diagnostic evaluation.

3. Make practice a part of your clients' summer vacation. If you have clients who are going to be away for an extended vacation this summer, suggest that the child use Lexercise during vacation so he or she won't lose ground over the break. It will only take 10-15 minutes a day for children to stay "on their game" and they can earn points and have fun doing it.
